Now I have created an external hard drive with High Sierra installed as a boot up disk. Running the test (the full test) returned no hardware issues. I then created a boot disk with Apple Hardware Test (AHT) to test all the hardware. Note that in all the Recovery attempts where I go to the MacOS Utilities interface the Internal Hard drive and the Recovery drive would be displayed. Anything that attempted to connect tot he internet basically would not work (even connecting to my wifi would not accept the password that I know was correct). I then tried making a USB installation stick but that comes back saying that it can't find Apple servers. I have tried all the recovery key options, diagnostics, verbose, etc. I went back to start it and it would not boot up anymore (gets to the end of the progress bar and just sits there). Hoping to get some helpful insight here! Thanks in advance.īooted from External HDD and can't see Internal HDD to copy files from I have a mid 2010 MBP with High Sierra OS that was turned off for a year. ![]() I guess the Thunderbolt2 to Thunderbolt3 adapter is a last resort for him. I've suggested target disk mode from my MacBook Pro, but he seems confident in the possibility to fix it. I've even dug through system_profiler to try to find some kind of a hint as to how to access the drive. This issue arose after playing with root files and permissions, and seems to have worsened after some rounds of musical OS's on flash drives. I adamantly believe the hard drive's issue is not physical damage. ![]() USBs are the only items shown in /Volumes. Running fsck just seems to check the flash drive, rather than the actual hard drive. Single user boot mode: But, no Macintosh HD! It seems to be nowhere, despite accessing the root directory. But, if a USB drive is plugged in, we can access. USB drive: This comes to the same issue, but with the only visible items being the USB's volumes and macOS Base System. "Macintosh HD" is nowhere to be found, so there's no identifier to reference it. Not grayed out - the only drive listed is macOS Base System, even in Terminal. Recovery mode disk utility: hard drive is not visible. I'll try to briefly state all of the solutions attempted, and their results. Upon attempting to boot, all that shows is the ? folder, and no mode can be accessed other than internet recovery. The computer is a 2013 iMac (no Retina display), containing a 3Tb hard drive (not a CS drive). I've tried everything I can find online, and nothing seems to fix the problem. A friend of mine got a little too curious with the hidden files in his hard drive, and has locked himself out of it, possibly due to changing permissions and/or deleting various hidden files. ![]() Missing Macintosh HD I know this question has been thrown around the internet hundreds of times by this point, but this issue seems to be unique. And as far as I know, FileVault is not on (I have seen other discussions about certain folders not being accessible when FileVault is enabled). Notes: I've tried showing hidden files with the chflags command, to no success. I am just trying to get some answers for now about why the /Users/ folder is just completely missing, at least in Recovery Mode. If all else fails, I have a hard drive enclosure arriving in a few days, which would hopefully allow me to access the files I need via another computer. I have considered reinstalling the OS, as I have read that it wouldn't overwrite the user folders, but I am somewhat worried to mess around with the drive at all, considering the corruption issue. So, I am hoping that this invisibility is just a change with Mojave? I have an older computer running Sierra, and when I go into Recovery Mode on that one, I am definitely able to see the /Users/ folder with no problem. So, my question is, does Recovery Mode hide this folder (for security reasons, etc)? Or is it possible that the folder is somehow lost in the corruption? This seems unlikely, but I am really worried that this might be the case. I've tried to think of where else I could access it, but it is simply not anywhere that is obvious to me as someone who has almost 2 decades of Mac experience. Normally that wouldn't be an issue for me, as I am experienced in Terminal enough to do that, but the issue I am facing is that my /Users/ folder is completely invisible when I try to find it via /Volumes/(OS partition name)/Users. ![]() My plan was to move off all of my user data via Terminal. I am able to boot into Recovery Mode, and I can see the contents of the drive in Terminal (meaning the hard drive is not completely inaccessible). I am trying to recover some data after a sudden case of hard drive corruption that has left my OS (Mojave) unable to boot.
